Sep. 16th, 2010 11:25 pmOnce upon a time, I wondered about the trend of writers getting to know their fans digitally. You get an overshare from people like Laurell K Hamilton and unintentional irony of "you shouldn't be blogging, you should be reading" from Robin Hobb. I haven't really found much of interest on most blogs, even if their websites have all the information you could ever need about their universes.
However, after Elizabeth Moon's racist rant about building a community center run by two Sufi Muslims (OHNOEZ SCARY BROWNFOLK) and Orson Scott Card's homophobic stance and LKH's oversharing and Anne McCaffrey's tent...pegging, I'm grateful for this new digital age. Personal blogs let me know which authors are crazy and which Just Don't Get It (I'm looking at you, Neil Gaiman. Your Sandman does not excuse support of Amanda Palmer's grotesque sideshow freak show). It also lets me know who is not all of that above, like Christopher Moore, John Scalzi and Jennifer Armintrout.
Which reminds me, I need to pick up one of Armintrout's books. After calling out LKH and being absolutely lovely when she came to my very small town library to speak, I am willing to give her urban fantasy a try. Also, she comes from a city not too far away from my home town and I always try to support the local writers, even if I'm no longer in that state.
